How I became an adjunct college instructor is a interesting, kind of full-circle story. I completed a master's degree at Seton Hall University back in 1975, knowing I wanted to teach college. There were no jobs. Nothing. Zero. I considered going for the doctorate, but decided against it when hearing depressing tales of PhDs driving taxi cabs and pumping gas. I fell into "technical writing" a field which was, by turns, good and bad. Like everything else. But, after being downsized (outsized?) from a small technology company, I applied as an adjunct instructor (adjunct professor sounds better, though it includes no better prestige) for the Fall semester, 2007 at the Boca Raton (south) campus. Full circle--sort of. How does this happen? I kept my head in the writing and literature "game," because to a large degree it defined who I was.
This continued, with two or three courses at the Lake Worth campus, until December, 2013, when I thought I had enough, less than a year from retirement.
But I did come back briefly! This time at the Palm Beach Gardens (north) campus for the Spring semester in January, 2015. Following is a list of the courses I've taught:
English Composition
English Composition II
American Literature: Beginnings to 1865
American Literature: 1865 to Present
Contemporary American Literature: 1945 to Present
British Literature: 1800 to Present
* Twice I was assigned "British Literature: Beginnings to 1800," but it didn't make enrollment (this is the "Beowulf" course which no one really wants to take).
